01 / A sense of place

Made for the space.
Full of character.

D&P Upholstery completed the bespoke banquette seating for Allards in Monkseaton in June 2023. The venue opened that summer, bringing together a classically decorated café bar and a bright garden Orangery restaurant.

This project is a study in seating with character. Long runs, corners and booths each have a place in the interior, while colour, pattern and upholstered detail give the different areas their own identity.

Colour / Pattern / Detail

Different finishes.
A shared character.

Three visible treatments: pink pattern and stripe, mustard with patterned cushions, and tan buttoned upholstery.

Pattern & stripe

A pink patterned back sits between a striped top roll and a plain pale pink seat. Stripes reappear along the lower edge, framing the more expressive fabric.

Colour & texture

Mustard upholstery is paired with grey patterned back cushions. Stud edging and green fringe add smaller details around the larger blocks of colour.

Buttons & depth

Tan upholstery and deep buttoning create a strongly defined surface against the dark timber panelling. The regular button pattern gives the seating its distinctive rhythm.

02 / A closer look

The small details.
The whole picture.

A guided look at the finished project: the setting, the upholstery and the details that bring it together.

Detail 01

Start with the whole room.

The wide view shows how the seating belongs to the interior. Pink and mustard upholstery sit alongside green panelling, white tabletops and blue dining chairs.

The banquettes trace the edges and corners of the space, leaving the individual chairs to form the other side of each table setting. It is a useful view of both the furniture and its relationship with the room.

Why it mattersA banquette is experienced as part of a space. The long view helps explain its position, proportions and relationship to the other furniture.

Detail 02

Let the pattern lead.

The pink banquette combines a patterned upright back, a striped top roll and plain seat upholstery. Each element is easy to read, even across the full run.

At the corner, the back and top roll follow the change in direction. The plain seats provide a quieter surface below the pattern, while the striped lower border ties the composition together.

Why it mattersUsing plain upholstery beside a stronger pattern gives the eye somewhere to rest and makes the details easier to appreciate.

Detail 03

Give the corner its own character.

The mustard seating has a different feel. Grey patterned back cushions sit above a bold base colour, with stud edging and a green fringe adding detail around the edges.

The photographs show the seating continuing around the corner, with the repeating cushions marking out the long run. The mix of large colour areas and smaller finishing details rewards a closer look.

Why it mattersA repeated cushion pattern gives a long seating run a rhythm; contrasting trim helps define its outline.

Detail 04

Bring depth to the café bar.

In the timber-panelled area, tan buttoned upholstery creates a more traditional character. The recessed buttons form a repeating pattern across the backrests, including where the seating turns a corner.

Timber tables and brass-coloured footrails sit alongside the finished seating. The wider photographs show how these surfaces work together, while the close views make the upholstery detail visible.

Why it mattersLight and shadow across buttoned upholstery give a single-colour surface depth without adding another printed pattern.

The final photographs bring the three treatments back into context: pink patterned banquettes, mustard corner seating and tan buttoned booths. Each has its own palette and details.

Together, they show the range of bespoke banquette seating completed by D&P Upholstery for this commercial project in June 2023. The gallery below includes wider room views and close details of the finished work.

Why it mattersThe finished-room photographs connect the close-up details to the overall character of the venue.
