01 / A sense of place
Made for the space.
Full of character.
For Signature North East in Whitley Bay, the finished seating brings a soft, tactile element to a richly detailed commercial interior. The project was completed in August 2021, in conjunction with Space ID.
The three photographs take us through individual booths, a shaped banquette beneath an illuminated mirror and a longer seating run beside the windows. Diamond quilting and a warm neutral palette connect the different arrangements.
Colour / Pattern / Detail
Different finishes.
A shared character.
Warm neutral upholstery, diamond quilting and plain panels, set against contrasting light and dark interiors.
Diamond quilting
Regular diagonal lines create a diamond pattern across the backrests. The stitching adds definition to the upholstery without introducing a printed fabric.
Plain & patterned surfaces
Plain upholstered sections sit alongside the quilted panels. This gives the seating a measured rhythm, with quieter areas between the more detailed surfaces.
Softness & structure
The soft sheen of the upholstery contrasts with dark panelling, straight table edges and metallic accents in the surrounding interior. The contrast helps the seating stand out.

02 / A closer look
The small details.
The whole picture.
A guided look at the finished project: the setting, the upholstery and the details that bring it together.
Detail 01
Give the seating a silhouette.
Beneath the round illuminated mirror, the banquette has a gently shaped upper edge. Diamond-quilted sections sit on either side of a plain central panel, with dark tables placed in front.
The change in height across the backrest gives this piece a distinct outline. Against the vertical wall detailing, the upholstered surface introduces softer lines while keeping a clear, architectural shape.
The neutral finish also catches the light differently across the quilted areas, making the stitching part of the visual texture.
Why it mattersA defined outline makes a banquette feel like a considered part of the room, even when its lower section sits behind tables.

Detail 02
Make room for smaller settings.
The booth arrangement breaks the space into a series of individual seating settings. Upright upholstered backs define each one, with quilted inner faces and plainer outer surfaces.
Large decorative trees, dark wall panelling and warm lighting give this part of the interior a strong atmosphere. The lighter upholstery provides a contrast, bringing the individual seats into focus.
Seen along the row, the repeated backs and table positions create a clear rhythm. Each booth reads as its own place within the larger room.
Why it mattersRepeating a detail across individual booths gives a space continuity while preserving the character of each seating setting.

Detail 03
Carry the detail into the light.
In the window-facing area, a longer banquette sits against lighter decorative walls. The diamond motif returns across the backrest, separated by plain upright sections. Upholstered chairs form the other side of the table settings.
Daylight reveals a different side of the same neutral palette. The quilted pattern remains visible, but the overall effect is lighter than in the darker, more enclosed area.
The finished photographs show how a consistent upholstery treatment can connect different parts of an interior while allowing each setting to retain its own mood.
Why it mattersA shared material palette and repeated stitch pattern can connect spaces without making every seating arrangement identical.

03 / The finished project
Every detail.
In its place.
The finished project brings quilted banquettes, individual booths and a consistent upholstery palette into a series of contrasting settings. Shaped backrests and plain panels give the seating structure; the diamond motif adds its distinctive detail.
